No matter your reason, using the migration utility is better than exporting and importing using GEDCOM. That’s not giving it enough credit! It’s far better than GEDCOM for this purpose. That’s because it doesn’t have to handle all the scenarios GEDCOM does.
In case you didn’t catch it the first time, this is a Windows program. That means you’ll need Windows. Or you could get a helpful person with Windows to install it and convert files for you.
These instructions and the accompanying videos will show you (or the helpful person) how to install the migration utility in Windows, use it to convert an FTM 2012 file to FTMM2, and import the resulting file in Family Tree Maker for Mac 2.
How to Install and Use the FTM Migration Utility
- Install the migration utility in Windows from your FTMM2 CD
- Open the migration utility
- Select the migration direction (from Windows to Macintosh or from Mac to Windows)
- Browse to the source tree
- Browse to the output tree file or folder (be sure not to overwrite your source file)
- Choose whether or not to include media files
- Click the Create File button
- On the Choose Output Version window, click the OK button
- Save the log file
- Copy the output tree file and log file to your Mac
- Open the file from the Finder or select File -> Import… from the FTMM2 menubar
- Name the imported tree file
- Click the Save button

Migrating a FTM 2012 File to FTMM2
1. To get started, click here to go to the FTM 2014.1 and Mac 3.1 Replacement Center. Fill out the form, then click the Check Registration button.
2. If you've typed in your information correctly, you will see a short message saying 'We have found your registration. You may download a replacement copy for free.' Click the Continue button to proceed.
3. On the next screen, you are given the option to upgrade to a Family Pack license. You can read about the Family Pack by clicking SHOW DETAILS. Whether you choose the free download, or the option to upgrade to a Family Pack, click NEXT to continue.
4. After clicking NEXT, you will be taken to the Family Tree Maker Gift Collection. As you'll see on-screen, you may wonder how it is that we can provide free updates and support for Family Tree Maker - we have several special offers for FTM users that may help you in your research, which also help to fund ongoing development. Click NEXT to continue through each page of the gift collection. When you get to the order page, click the Order Now button.
5. Fill in your order details on the next page, and click NEXT.
6. Make sure you click the Complete Order button on the page with your order summary. The next page will provide you with download links for FTM 2014.1 or Mac 3.1 that you can click to start downloading the installer. You'll also receive the download links via email.
